On her birthday today, we celebrate Sakshi Malik, a name etched forever in Indian sporting history. Born on 3 September 1992 in Mokhra village, Rohtak, Haryana, Sakshi rose from humble beginnings to become a trailblazer in wrestling, inspiring countless young athletes across the country.
Her journey in the sport began at the age of 12 under coach Ishwar Dahiya, where she quickly displayed grit and determination. Over the years, she proved her mettle on the mat, winning medals at the Asian Junior Championships, the Commonwealth Games, and the Asian Championships, steadily building her reputation as one of India’s finest wrestlers.
The defining moment of her career came at the Rio 2016 Olympics, where she scripted history by winning the bronze medal in the 58kg freestyle category. With her comeback victory in the bronze medal match, she became the first Indian woman wrestler to win an Olympic medal, and only the fourth Indian woman overall to achieve an Olympic podium finish. Her win was more than just a medal, it was a symbol of resilience and a breakthrough for women’s wrestling in India.
For her achievements, Sakshi was honoured with the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award in 2016, India’s highest sporting recognition, and the Padma Shri in 2017, one of the nation’s top civilian awards. These honours stand as testimony to her excellence and contribution to Indian sport.
Beyond the wrestling mat, Sakshi is admired for her positive outlook and inspiring words. Reflecting on her Olympic triumph, she once said, “I won because of my technique, not my power.” It is this belief in skill, preparation, and perseverance that continues to inspire athletes and fans alike.
