The ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 final in Ahmedabad did not begin with cricket. Before the most anticipated finale between India and New Zealand began, the closing ceremony at the Narendra Modi Stadium brought together global and Indian music stars, reflecting how the T20 format increasingly blends sport with entertainment. The ceremony featured international pop icon Ricky Martin alongside Indian performers Sukhbir Singh and Falguni Pathak, creating an energetic musical build-up to the tournament’s finale.

Over the years, T20 cricket has evolved beyond the boundaries of a traditional sporting event. With packed stadiums, global broadcasts and streaming numbers breaking records and entertainment-led ceremonies, its finals have started to resemble the spectacle of global sporting events where music, pop culture and sport intersect. The Ahmedabad closing ceremony reflected that shift, bringing performers from different musical backgrounds onto the same stage before the first ball of the final.

Ricky Martin’s performance

Ricky Martin delivered an energetic set during the ceremony, performing hits including Livin’ la Vida Loca” and “The Cup of Life.” His appearance added an international pop dimension to the event and underscored the scale of the spectacle surrounding the final.

The viral ‘Oh Ho Ho Ho’ moment

A video showing Martin dancing to Sukhbir Singh’s Punjabi hit “Oh Ho Ho Ho” began circulating widely online, capturing the singer vibing enthusiastically to the track during the rehearsal as well as the live performance. The clip soon went viral across social platforms, becoming one of the standout moments from the evening’s festivities.

The clip quickly sparked reactions online, with fans celebrating the unusual blend of Latin pop, Punjabi music and cricket. One user wrote, “Ricky Martin dancing to ‘Oh Ho Ho Ho’ at a cricket final was not on my bingo card.” Another commented, “Latin pop meets Punjabi beats at a T20 World Cup - this is peak global sport.”

A third reaction read, “Cricket finals now look like global concerts before the match even begins.”

Others described the crossover as a reflection of the format’s entertainment-driven identity, with one post noting, “Only T20 cricket could bring Ricky Martin and a Punjabi party anthem onto the same stage.”

Alongside Martin, Indian performers also took centre stage. Punjabi pop singer Sukhbir Singh, known for party anthems such as “Oh Ho Ho Ho,” performed during the ceremony, while Falguni Pathak, whose music is closely associated with festive and garba celebrations across India, added a familiar homegrown presence to the lineup. Their participation highlighted how the ceremony combined global pop with Indian musical identities, reflecting the tournament’s international reach while remaining rooted in local culture.
