Ambi Parameswaran, one of India’s most esteemed marketing professionals and brand strategists, marks his 70th birthday on 18 June. As he reaches this significant milestone, he remains defined by the same intellectual rigour and inquisitiveness that have shaped his remarkable five-decade journey spanning advertising, brand consulting, mentorship and authorship.
The milestone coincides aptly with the recent release of Parameswaran’s latest book, Marketing Mixology, which was formally launched on 10 June. In this work, he distills his decades of expertise into four fundamental themes: consumer insight, brand building, negotiation and selling, and effective communication. Parameswaran underscores that the most critical capability in marketing is the ability to truly understand consumers. Marketing Mixology offers a quick, engaging 'mixology tour' through the marketer’s essential toolkit — a testament to Parameswaran's enduring belief in simplifying complexity without losing rigour.
Professional Journey
Parameswaran’s professional journey began in the late 1970s, encompassing roles across sales, marketing, and advertising with organisations such as Boots Company, Rediffusion Advertising, and UDI Yellow Pages. His most significant tenure, however, was with FCB Ulka, where he spent 27 years. From 2003 to 2013, he served as CEO and Executive Director, playing a central role in elevating Ulka into one of India’s top three marketing communications groups.
He has been instrumental in building and nurturing some of India’s most iconic brands, including Thermax, Digene, Brufen, Santoor, Sundrop, TCS, Wipro, ICICI Bank, Indica Cars, Zee TV, among others. As a brand coach, he has consulted for PepsiCo, Tata Motors, Abbott, Sun Pharma, D Décor, Wipro Consumer and more, seamlessly blending the art and science of brand storytelling with boardroom strategy.
Influentional Leader
Parameswaran’s influence extends well beyond marketing campaigns and corporate performance. He has been a regular contributor to leading business publications, conducted workshops for CII, AIMA, OPPI, FICCI, and spoken at forums including TEDx (five times), the Kellogg India Business Conference and Cornell University.
As an Adjunct Professor at SPJIMR and a visiting faculty at IIM Ahmedabad, IIM Calcutta, ISB and MICA, he has mentored many marketing professionals, keeping alive the dialogue between academia and industry.
Parameswaran’s influence has also reached into governance and institutional leadership. He served as President of the Advertising Agencies Association of India (AAAI) from 2014 to 2016 and led the Advertising Club Bombay from 2003 to 2005. Additionally, he was a member of the Board of Governors at IIM Calcutta for a decade and has held independent directorships with with Galaxy Surfactants, Qube Cinemas, FDC, THG Publications and Rediff.com.
Celebrated Author & Storyteller
Reaching the age of 70 has not dimmed his passion for writing. With 11 books to his credit, Parameswaran continues to write with lucidity and passion. In recent years, Parameswaran has chronicled the evolving landscape of Indian marketing with highly regarded works such as Nawabs, Nudes, Noodles, SPONGE – Leadership Lessons I Learnt from My Clients, SPRING – Bouncing Back from Rejection, and All The World’s A Stage on personal branding.
Parameswaran has been honoured with the Distinguished Alumnus Award by both of his alma maters, IIT Madras (2009) and IIM Calcutta (2018). Additionally, he holds a PhD from Mumbai University, an AMP from Harvard Business School, and an Executive Coaching Certification from CFI.
Parameswaran stands not just as an advertising veteran, but as a mentor, guide and thinker whose ideas continue to shape Indian marketing’s future.
