WhatsApp tests real-time fact-checking with ‘Ask Meta AI’

New experimental feature aims to curb misinformation within chats

Meta-owned WhatsApp is introducing a new experimental feature, Ask Meta AI, designed to help users verify information in real time. Currently being tested through the TestFlight beta program for iOS users, the feature enables users to directly ask Meta AI questions about specific messages, streamlining the fact-checking process within conversations.

According to media reports, the feature will allow users to select a message and instantly seek clarification or additional context, reducing the effort of manually forwarding texts to the AI assistant. Positioned as a proactive fact-checking tool, Ask Meta AI could prove particularly useful in group chats and community discussions where unverified claims often circulate.

While Meta AI is already integrated within WhatsApp to provide answers on various topics, this addition makes verification faster and more seamless. Importantly, user privacy remains central as messages are not shared with Meta AI unless the user chooses to provide context and confirm. Simply selecting “Ask Meta AI” does not transmit content.

The update is still in the testing phase, but Android beta users have already begun exploring its functionality. Once refined, the feature is expected to roll out globally, reinforcing WhatsApp’s ongoing efforts to tackle misinformation and enhance user trust in the platform.
