WhatsApp is experimenting with a new ‘Close Friends’ feature for Status updates. The move is similar to an Instagram feature.
Currently, WhatsApp Status—similar to Instagram Stories—allows users to post photos, short videos, and text updates that vanish after 24 hours. Privacy settings already let users share with all contacts, exclude specific people, or restrict updates to a handpicked group.
The upcoming Close Friends option will allow users to maintain a dedicated, reusable list of “trusted contacts”.
According to reports, the feature is currently in beta testing on iOS.
Status updates shared with ‘Close Friends’ will be marked with a different colored ring. The list will also be private, and contacts won’t be notified when they are added or removed.
The company has not yet confirmed when the feature will roll out publicly or expand to Android users.
