Tanmay Bhat recently fell victim to a cyber breach when his X (formerly Twitter) account was hacked. The hackers used his platform to promote Solana, a well-known blockchain and cryptocurrency. A fraudulent post that surfaced during the hack falsely claimed that Bhat was launching his own token, leveraging his online credibility to attract unsuspecting followers into a potential scam.
The now-deleted post read: "I love memes and Solana, so I figured it was time for me to drop my own coin. Dev supply will be locked momentarily, I will be using YouTube revenue from streams and videos to support the coin and implementing it into my content."
Brands spend millions collaborating with influencers to leverage their credibility, but hackers have identified an opportunity to exploit this trust for fraudulent activities. With influencer marketing becoming a cornerstone of digital advertising, hackers are now weaponizing verified social media accounts to push scams under the guise of brand endorsements. The risk? Brands lose credibility, audiences fall victim to fraud, and influencers suffer reputational damage.
Once Tanmay regained control of his account, he swiftly addressed the breach via Instagram Stories, alerting his followers: "My Twitter has been hacked. Please don't click on any links. Working to fix it." His warning serves as an urgent reminder for influencers, brands, and audiences alike to stay vigilant against digital impersonation.
This isn’t an isolated incident. In 2020, some of the most influential figures in the world—Barack Obama, Joe Biden, Elon Musk, Bill Gates, Kanye West, and Kim Kardashian—fell victim to a high-profile Bitcoin scam that used their accounts to promote fraudulent cryptocurrency investments. Similarly, YouTube accounts of Indian creators have been hijacked and rebranded under Tesla-themed crypto scams, further demonstrating how digital platforms are being exploited at an alarming rate.
