Indian Premier League has revolutionised the way cricket is played and consumed. IPL already has a cult following in terms of stadium attendance and TV viewership. It is now commanding a significant presence in the virtual world.
As per the data recorded by WAM, an internet audience measurement service by IMRB International, the very first day of the 2013 season – April 3 – witnessed over one million unique visitors, generating 13 million page views on IPL-related content.
Day 1 content viewed was around the highlights of the opening ceremony and live telecast of the Kolkata Knight Riders vs. Delhi Daredevils match.
Google topped the list, followed closely by YouTube and iplt20.com. The multitude of searches on Google ranged from live streaming of matches, interesting statistics and match schedules.

Over the next few days, IMRB’s WAM initiative detected a slight decrease in web activity – overall IPL related page visits fell to just over 11 million on day 3. Whether these are the numbers stabilising after the initial excitement and hype or a genuine decrease in interest, time will tell.
iplt20.com outperformed YouTube by generating over a 100,000 more page views than YouTube and dwarfed Yahoo that generated just over a 170,000 visits.
