OpenAI has discontinued its AI video generation platform Sora, bringing an unexpected end to a high-value collaboration with Disney that was signed less than four months ago. The shutdown marks a strategic shift as the company reallocates focus toward enterprise offerings, coding tools and long-term artificial general intelligence deployment.

Sora gained traction after its standalone app launched in September 2025 and briefly reached the top position on Apple’s App Store. The platform enabled users to create and share hyper-realistic AI-generated videos and was widely adopted following its public rollout in late 2024. However, its rapid rise brought concerns about content safety, including misuse involving copyrighted characters, misinformation and inappropriate material.

The closure directly impacts Disney, which entered a three-year agreement with OpenAI in December 2025. The deal included a planned $1 billion equity investment and access to more than 200 Disney-owned characters spanning franchises such as Marvel, Pixar and Star Wars for use within Sora. The investment, however, had not been completed, and no capital was transferred before the shutdown.

Operationally, the decision appears to have come without advance notice to key stakeholders. Teams from both companies were engaged in ongoing work related to Sora as recently as earlier this week, before Disney was informed of the discontinuation shortly after a scheduled interaction.

OpenAI indicated that the Sora team will now transition toward research areas including robotics and longer-term AI development. The company is also consolidating its consumer and developer-facing products, including ChatGPT, Codex and its browser initiatives, into a unified platform. Leadership restructuring reflects this shift, with a renewed emphasis on scaling AGI deployment.

Disney, meanwhile, is expected to seek alternative partnerships in the AI video space as it continues to explore immersive and interactive experiences. This development leaves a gap in the evolving AI-media landscape, with limited large-scale players currently positioned to integrate entertainment IP with generative video technologies at scale.
