The government has extended the deadline for stakeholder feedback on proposed amendments to the Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021 by seven days, with the new submission date now set for May 7, 2026.
In a notice issued on April 21, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology said, “In order to provide stakeholders an opportunity to examine and submit feedback on the aforesaid additional changes along with the earlier draft amendments, it has been decided to place these additional amendments also in the public domain for consultation.”
The ministry had earlier released the draft amendments on March 30 for public consultation and subsequently extended the deadline to April 29. The latest extension comes after the government introduced further changes, particularly to Rule 3(3)(a)(ii).
Detailing the new provision, the notice stated that it “requires continuous and clearly visible display of label for synthetically generated information throughout the duration of the content in visual display.”
Officials indicated that the additional time is meant to allow stakeholders to review both the original draft and the newly proposed changes before submitting their inputs.
The ministry has also made available an updated consolidated version of the rules. It reiterated that “The submissions will be held in fiduciary capacity in MeitY and shall not be disclosed to any one at any stage, enabling persons to submit feedback/comments freely without any hesitation.”
Stakeholders have been asked to submit rule-wise feedback via email in Word or PDF format by May 7, 2026.
