Longtime advertising executive and McCann Worldgroup founder John J. Dooner Jr. has passed away, leaving behind a legacy that transformed how the industry structures its agencies and serves clients in the digital age.

John J. Dooner Jr., a visionary advertising executive who founded McCann Worldgroup and shaped the modern advertising industry, died of heart failure on December 31st in Jupiter, Florida. He was 77 years old.

Born in 1948 in New Rochelle, New York, Dooner began his advertising career at Grey Advertising in 1970 before joining McCann in 1984. During his early years at McCann, he worked on major accounts including Coca-Cola and Gillette, building a reputation for client excellence. His leadership abilities led to his promotion to president and CEO of McCann Erickson in 1992, a position he held until 2000.

Dooner's most significant contribution to the industry came in 1997 when he formalized McCann Worldgroup as a unified global network. The structure brought together diverse agencies, including McCann, MRM, Momentum, McCann Health, and Craft, under a single umbrella, creating an integrated approach to marketing capabilities in the rapidly evolving digital landscape. This organizational model became a template that influenced how the industry would structure itself for decades to come.

From 2000 to 2003, Dooner served as chairman and CEO of Interpublic Group, McCann's parent company, where he orchestrated the acquisition of True North, bringing influential agencies like FCB and Deutsch into the network. He returned to McCann Worldgroup in 2003 as chairman, leading the organization until 2011 before transitioning to chairman emeritus.

Beyond his corporate achievements, Dooner was deeply committed to the broader advertising community. He served as chairman of the Ad Council, vice chairman of the 4A's, and worked closely with the Advertising Educational Foundation to support future generations of advertising professionals.

His contributions to the industry were recognized with his induction into the Advertising Hall of Fame in 2019. Dooner also dedicated his time to nonprofit and educational causes, serving on the boards of United Way Worldwide and his alma mater, St. Thomas University.
