His start in the PR & communications industry
When asked about how Shailesh started his journey in the communications industry, he credits his deep-seated passion for storytelling for compelling him towards the communications industry. He says, “After earning my degrees in science and business management, I dedicated a decade to working with leading media and corporate organisations, including Bennett, Coleman & Co. (The Times of India Group), Living Media (The India Today Group) and Torrent Pharmaceuticals. These experiences provided me with invaluable insights into corporate communications, media relations, and reputation management, which served as the bedrock for my subsequent entrepreneurial endeavours. Each role not only honed my skills but also fuelled my ambition to innovate within the field, ultimately shaping my vision for a future in communication, which led me to establish Simulations PR.”
Inception of Simulations PR
Sharing his inspiration behind establishing Simulations PR, he mentions, “The founding of Simulations PR was inspired by a clear vision to fill a significant gap in the market for public relations and government affairs services. After spending over a decade immersed in the communications industry, I observed that the region was missing dedicated PR consultancies. In those days, while larger advertising firms offered PR as part of a broader service bouquet, there was a distinct absence of specialised agencies focused solely on public relations. Recognising this unique opportunity, I launched Simulations PR at the dawn of the new millennium.”
No business exists without its challenges. Referring to the challenges he faced as a founder, he acknowledges, “In the very first year of launch, a disastrous earthquake happened. Communal riots followed the next year. Other challenges that still resonate today included things like PR was still a relatively novel concept for many, making it difficult to convey its value to potential clients. Establishing credibility was particularly daunting, as scepticism about the necessity of PR services was widespread. It required persistent effort and time to educate the market and illustrate the tangible benefits of effective public relations.”
However, as our clients began to see the advantages first-hand, the process became significantly smoother. Today, Simulations PR distinguishes itself through our tailored approach and unwavering commitment to aligning communication strategies with our client’s business objectives. Our journey has been one of resilience and innovation, and we continue to evolve alongside the dynamic landscape of public relations.
His evolution from communications consultant to business leader
Shailesh's professional trajectory showcases a remarkable evolution from a communications consultant to a successful business leader. When asked about what drove this transformation, he mentions that this success was driven by his unwavering belief in the importance of providing unique and valuable services to clients independently. While establishing his own venture presented various challenges, Goyal acknowledges that collaboration, mentorship and strategic thinking were essential for success.
He says the initial phase of his entrepreneurial journey was full of highs and lows. He had to navigate the complexities of building a business from the ground up, including securing funding, assembling a talented team and establishing a strong brand identity. Additionally, he had to adapt to the multifaceted responsibilities of leadership, which required him to make critical decisions, manage diverse stakeholders, and steer the company towards its long-term goals.
“Today, I take pride in leading a company that not only meets the needs of our clients but also contributes positively to the community we serve. This transformation has been a remarkable evolution, one that continues to inspire me every day as I strive to make a lasting impact in the communications industry. Despite the hurdles, this journey has been incredibly fulfilling. It has allowed me to not only shape my own destiny but also empower others by creating a dynamic team,” Shailesh explains.
His contributions as a thought leader and mentor
Moreover, Shailesh also contributes to the industry through his diverse roles as the ex-Chairman of the Indo-American Chamber of Commerce (IACC Gujarat), ex-President of PRSI Ahmedabad, Member of PRCAI, Member of Board of Studies for Mass Communication, Pandit Deendayal Energy University (PDEU) and member of CII’s Gujarat State Council, and as Governing Council Member of Ahmedabad Management Association (AMA).
He elucidates that a desire to engage with a community of domain professionals committed to enhancing the value of the profession inspired him to join the Public Relations Society of India (PRSI). “I felt a strong sense of responsibility to elevate the PR profession, advocating for greater recognition of its value and expertise within organizations. I recognised an opportunity to foster respect and dignity in our field, which is often overlooked,” he further adds, talking about his inspiration.
Talking about his contributions through PRSI and PRCAI, he remarks, “My involvement with PRSI and PRCAI has been driven by a commitment to enhancing industry standards within public relations. Through these associations, I have worked alongside fellow professionals to advocate for best practices and ethical guidelines that elevate our profession. It has been inspiring to collaborate with like-minded individuals who share a passion for advancing public relations practice standards.”
Talking about his contributions through other roles, he explains, “As chairman of IACC Gujarat, I had the privilege of fostering stronger Indo-US business relations in the region. By organising seminars, networking events and building delegations, I aimed to create a vibrant platform for collaboration and innovation, helping local businesses tap into international opportunities.”
He has also contributed directly to shaping the educational landscape for future professionals by serving on the PDEU’s Board of Studies for Mass Communication. “By working to make the curriculum more relevant and aligned with industry needs, I have helped prepare graduates to enter the workforce as competent and confident individuals,” he shares.
Mentoring young professionals is another initiative which is quite close to his heart. “It has been particularly rewarding, as I enjoy sharing insights and guiding them as they embark on their careers. At the Ahmedabad Management Association, I have facilitated knowledge-sharing initiatives that connect professionals across various sectors. I am grateful for the opportunities I have had to contribute meaningfully while learning from others along the way.”
Key lessons he learned
Throughout his journey as a communications professional, he has learned several invaluable lessons that have profoundly shaped his approach to the industry and accelerated his growth.
Sharing the first lesson, he shares, “I’ve learned that building relationships is paramount. Strong connections with clients, colleagues and stakeholders are the foundation of our field. Trust is not just a by-product of these relationships; it is essential. Maintaining that trust requires consistent effort, transparency and open communication. When clients feel valued and understood, it fosters a collaborative environment where creative ideas can flourish.”
Another critical lesson he learned is the importance of continuous learning, agility in approach and adaptability. “The communications landscape is constantly evolving, influenced by technological advancements and shifting societal norms. To remain relevant, we must embrace change and be willing to update our skills and knowledge regularly,” he emphasises.
Lastly, he guides professionals that there is no substitute for hard work and dedication. “Success is the result of persistent effort, resilience in the face of challenges, and an unwavering commitment to excellence,” he concludes.
His vision & future plans
The PR industry is undergoing a remarkable transformation, and referring to this transition, Shailesh mentions his plan to contribute to the industry in the future meaningfully, “As PR professionals, we must adapt and embrace this evolution, and I am excited to be part of this journey. My primary focus moving forward will be on nurturing talent and equipping professionals with the skills and knowledge they need to thrive in this dynamic landscape, to help ensure that the PR industry remains relevant and impactful.”
In terms of new ventures, he continues, “We are gearing up to provide AI-based solutions for content development, curated creation and conversions. These initiatives will leverage cutting-edge technology to enhance our services and deliver greater value to our clients. Additionally, we are actively working on scaling up our digital and online offerings, recognising the growing importance of digital platforms in shaping public perception and engagement. I am committed to leading these efforts and collaborating with fellow professionals to drive positive change in our industry.”
The ever-changing nature of the PR and communications industry, where each day presents new challenges and opportunities, is what excites Shailesh most about the industry. He says, “Each day brings fresh opportunities and challenges, which in turn lead to new learnings and insights. Even after over three decades in this industry, I find this aspect invigorating and inspiring.”
Lastly, he summarises and underscores that it is this blend of creativity, continuous evolution and strategic importance that fuels his passion for PR.
