Nipun Aggarwal and Vinod Kannan have emerged as the leading contenders for the position of Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Air India, according to latest media reports.

Aggarwal, Air India’s Chief Commercial Officer, has been closely involved in the airline’s transformation programme following its acquisition by the Tata Group and is seen as a strong internal candidate for the CEO role.

Kannan, who previously served as Chief Executive Officer of Vistara, has considerable experience in airline leadership, having led the carrier ahead of its 2024 merger with Air India.

Discussions are ongoing within Tata Sons, and no final decision has yet been reached. Reports also suggest that Aggarwal is understood to have the backing of Chairman N. Chandrasekaran.

The search for a successor gained momentum after Air India Chief Executive Campbell Wilson confirmed his resignation in April.
