At the same time, Apple has appointed well-known AI expert Amar Subramanya as the new Vice President of AI, reporting to Craig Federighi.

In this position, Subramanya will lead major areas including Apple Foundation Models, machine learning research, and AI safety and evaluation. Several teams that previously reported to Giannandrea will now shift to Sabih Khan and Eddy Cue to better align with their existing operations.

Giannandrea, who joined Apple in 2018, has played a key role in shaping the company’s AI and machine learning strategy. Under his leadership, Apple developed strong capabilities in foundation models, search technology, ML research, and AI infrastructure.

Subramanya brings strong experience to Apple, having most recently worked as the Corporate Vice President of AI at Microsoft. Before that, he spent 16 years at Google, where he oversaw engineering for the Google Gemini Assistant. His deep knowledge of AI research and product development will help drive Apple’s future innovations, including the rollout of upcoming Apple Intelligence features.

Apple CEO Tim Cook said, “We appreciate John’s leadership in shaping our AI direction and helping Apple deliver meaningful innovation. AI has always been an important part of Apple’s vision. We’re happy to have Amar join Craig’s team and bring his exceptional AI expertise to Apple. Craig has played a key role in our AI efforts, especially as we work toward launching a more personalized Siri next year.”

With Giannandrea’s foundation, Federighi’s expanded role, and Subramanya’s strong background, Apple is well-positioned to push forward with its goal of delivering smart, secure, and highly personalized experiences for users worldwide.
