Airport License Fees

With the nationwide lockdown bringing major distress for the OOH sector, airport media rights holders have appealed for a force majeure on payment of licence fees for the lockdown period. They have cited zero visibility due to non allowance of domestic flights untill May 25, 2020 as the reason.

Highly placed sources in the OOH industry have said the government is likely to make a statement on the matter soon. The source said the OOH industry has been assured of waivers for the lockdown period. Post lockdown, all contracts will be restarted on the basis of a mutual agreement. The same structure will be followed by municipal corporations as well.

A prominent player in the industry shared, “Some of the authorities are yet to revert on the appeal. However, verbally they have promised that it is in progress and will be done. I think as far as the municipal corporations of Delhi is concerned, the decision is likely to be made within this week. Most MCGM authorities as well as Railway authorities have also confirmed that they will be giving a concession and will not charge licence fees for the lockdown period.”

The relief will be a big support for the OOH industry as airport sites have always been an important location for brands. It is expected that with airlines being allowed to operate again, airport advertising will bounce back soon. Brands in the mobile handsets space, automobiles, lifestyle products, e-commerce, BFSI will probably be the first movers.

Meanwhile, Hyderabad Airport has agreed to not charge licence fees for the lockdown period.
