The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has released a comprehensive set of recommendations aimed at creating a robust regulatory framework for ground-based broadcasters. These measures are intended to enhance transparency, improve consumer choice and bring fairness to the broadcasting sector.
A significant highlight of the recommendations is the mandatory provision for broadcasters to offer their channels on an a la carte basis to Direct-to-Home (DTH) operators and cable service providers. This move is aimed at empowering consumers by allowing them to choose and pay for only those channels they wish to watch, instead of being obligated to purchase bundled channel packages.
The framework also mandates broadcasters to set maximum retail prices (MRPs) for each channel offered on an a la carte basis. This pricing regulation seeks to prevent arbitrary pricing practices, ensuring affordability and providing clarity for consumers.
To support these changes, TRAI has emphasized the adoption of addressable systems by service providers. This technology is essential for the implementation of a la carte channel offerings, enabling consumers to exercise their choices effectively while improving overall satisfaction.
These recommendations are part of TRAI’s broader efforts to align India’s broadcasting sector with global best practices, making it more consumer-centric. By fostering competition and providing greater flexibility, the regulatory body aims to address the diverse needs of Indian viewers, ensuring they only pay for the content they want to consume.
The implementation of these measures is expected to create a more equitable and transparent broadcasting environment while enhancing the overall experience for consumers across the country.
