How Southern channels fared during the first week of COVID-19 outbreak

In BARC week 11, Sun TV, Star Maa, Asianet and Zee Kannada maintain lead in Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam and Kannada markets respectively

In the first week during the COVID-19 outbreak, when many people were confined to their homes, we look at how all four Southern languages – Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam and Kannada performed.

Tamil: Sun TV rises

As per the Broadcast Audience Research Council (BARC) India data of week 11, Sun TV continues to maintain its leadership position with 868544 (000s) impressions, an increase over week 10 where it clocked 851946 (000s) impressions. Star Vijay maintained its second position with 436306 (000s) impressions, down from 456893 (000s) impressions in week 10. Taking the third position is Zee Tamil which clocked 406964 (000s) impressions, as against 411637 (000s) impressions in week 10. KTV and Star Vijay Super bagged the fourth and fifth spots with 331956 (000s) impressions (up from 259095 (000s) impressions in week 10) and 137411 impressions (up from 108190 (000s) impressions) respectively.

Telugu: A Dip in impressions

Moving on to the Telugu space most played saw a dip in impressions. Star Maa retained its numero uno position with 659254 (000s) impressions, down from 686222 (000s) impressions in week 10. ETV Telugu and Zee Telugu were in the second and third position with 446625 (000s) impressions (down from 424836 (000s) impressions in week 10) and 442705 (000s) impressions ( a decline from 414995 (000s) impressions) respectively. Rounding up the top five watched Telugu channels were Gemini TV with 374737 (000s) impressions and Star Maa Movies with 201007 (000s) impressions.

Malayalam: Asianet maintains its dominant position

In Kerala, Asianet maintains its dominant position with 313311 (000s) impressions, up from 302142 (000s) impressions week-on-week. Mazhavil Manorama retains its second position clocking 88404 (000s) impressions, witnessing a small dip from 89661 (000s) impressions in week 10. Flowers TV jumped from the fifth position, in week 10, to the third spot with 75020 (000s) impressions, as against 75316 (000s) impressions a week earlier. Surya TV was in the fourth spot with 72994 (000s) impressions. However, Zee Keralam saw a sharp dip from the third spot to the fifth clocking 68051 (000s) impressions in week 11, down from 78362 (000s) impressions in week 10.

Kannada: Zee Kannada & Udaya Movies gain

Zee Kannada retains its leadership position and saw an increase clocking 486689 (000s) impressions, up from 464604 (000s) impressions. Colors Kannada comes in second with 212792 (000s) impressions, versus 219415 (000s) impressions in week 10. Udaya TV, interchanges its position with Star Suvarna, to take the third spot with 209928 (000s) impressions, though it sees a marginal dip from 211095 (000s) impressions a week earlier). Star Suvarna clocks 206562 (000s) impressions at the fourth position, down from 216641 (000s) impressions. Rounding off the top five is Udaya Movies with 165729 (000s) impressions, up from 145395 (000s) impressions.
