Sony Pictures Networks is sharpening its India play under new leadership, with a renewed focus on rebuilding its growth strategy in the aftermath of the merger attempt with Zee, said Sony Pictures Entertainment Inc President and CEO Ravi Ahuja adding that the company is already seeing momentum, particularly in channel ratings, since Gaurav Banerjee took over as MD and CEO.
Explaining the strategic importance of the market, Ahuja said, “India is a high growth market. The media and entertainment industry there is continuing to develop rapid economic and population growth. We believe that the Indian market has great potential.”
He underscored Banerjee’s arrival as a turning point.
“We have a new MD and CEO Gaurav Banerjee comes to us from Star where he led the content initiative. Their team is focused on strengthening content production and distribution related partnerships as well as rebuilding and reorienting the growth strategy following the merger we attempted to do in the past, that includes investment in digital, streaming platform SonyLIV,” he said during a fireside chat released by the company recently.
One of the early signs of progress, Ahuja noted, has been the rise in viewership.
“As an example of the progress, the ratings for our channels are really on the upswing since the new management joined us,” he said.
According to him, marquee sports rights are expected to fuel further growth. “We recently secured media rights for Asia Cricket Council tournaments from 2024 to 2031 which we anticipate will boost viewership and enhance SonyLIV,” he noted.
