Top level changes at Sakal; new COO, CMO named

Sakal Media Group has undergone top-level reshuffling, with Jaisurya Das appointed as Chief Operating Officer, while Shailesh Amonkar is the new Chief Marketing Officer. Confirming the changes, Abhijeet Pawar, Managing Director and Editor, Sakal Media Group, said, “This is a natural process. Some people join, and some move on, nothing more.”

For Das, this is his second innings in the print space. With over 18 years’ experience in media selling and creating brands, Das had set up The Times of India in Pune. His association with the Sakal Group is not new. He has been involved with the Group as consultant.

On his new role, Das said, “I’ve been tracking media for almost 20 years, and this space is big. This offer has come at a time when there are exciting opportunities in this space, plus the Maharashtra market has seen a lot of action. It was in my adrenaline to be part of this action.”

Das moves from Xanadu Consulting Group, a media and advertising talent search outfit that he had founded in 2003, where he was Chief Mentor and Founder-Director. About Xanadu, he said, “The brand name will live on. Though I have exited, the team there will do a wonderful job.” On the experience that he brings to the table, Das said, “What one brings is a whole load of experience, differential thinking and a step-by-step approach to take the growth story ahead.”

Meanwhile, as CMO, Shailesh Amonkar will be heading the sales and marketing functions at Sakal Group. This is Amonkar’s second stint with Sakal Media. He said, “I had been with the group from 2003 to 2006 as Head of Sales.” He had then ventured out to set up his own media firm, Kemistry Media Solutions. He was also associated with The Times of India from 1987 to 2003, before he joined Sakal. On his move, he said, “It’s great to get back to print media. The Pune market has changed in the last five years; market dynamics have changed, new players have come in and for me, it’s a challenge to work in this changed environment.”

Commenting on the new appointments, Abhijeet Pawar said, “I’m happy that Jai and Shailesh have joined us. In a way they have always been part of the Sakal family.” With the consolidation of the team, Pawar sure sounded upbeat and added, “In future, we shall see a consolidation of all media, by which I mean apart from print, TV and online.”

Meanwhile, Sakal Group has also seen some top level exits. Business Head LS Krishnan and Marketing Head Indranil Datta have put in their papers. Krishnan confirmed that he would continue with the Group till the end of this financial year (March 31), while Datta’s last day will be February 18.

Looking back at his experience at Sakal, Dutta observed, “It was a very good experience with Sakal, I’d rather say it was excellent.” He added, “I am moving on for better career prospects.”

Krishnan added here, “I just want to say that it was a great experience working with such an established brand.” About future plans, he didn’t share much, except saying that he was moving on to “do something different”, and added that he would continue in the media domain.

About the exits, Pawar commented, “Both Krishnan and Datta have contributed immensely. They will continue to be a part of our family.”
