Sunil Mutreja elevated to Executive Director at Amar Ujala

Amar Ujala group has elevated Sunil Mutreja to Executive Director. Mutreja was informally handling this responsibility from the beginning of the Financial Year, as the change had taken place in April 2011 itself. However, it was formalised in June 2011, following the approval from the board.

Prior to this, Mutreja was President, Marketing at Amar Ujala, a role that he would continue to play.

In a conversation with exchange4media, Mutreja said, “For me, this means the responsibility shifting from top-line to bottom-line. The role will require attention towards the cost factor, expense and revenue, meaning working with the business as its business head, and not just a marketing head.”

Mutreja’s elevation comes on the back of four years of focussed growth for Amar Ujala. Since 2007, the advertising revenue of the company has grown from Rs 168 crore to Rs 340 crore. For the same period, according to numbers from the Audit Bureau of Circulation (ABC), the circulation number for Amar Ujala has grown from 13,55,000 to 17,95,000. The Profitability before Tax (PBT) has grown from a mere Rs 4 crore to Rs 58 crore in the last four years, the number being maintained in the last two years.

Amar Ujala launched two major editions in this period, including Lucknow and Gorakhpur, which are both well-established now, covering nine districts each. The company is now gearing up to launch Rohtak edition in January 2012.

Mutreja joined Amar Ujala in May, 2007 as President, Marketing. Since then he was looking after national ad sales, brand management and circulation in the group. He had begun his media career in 1989 with The Times of India where he spent four years, before handling Times TV as Associate VP for a year. Prior to that, he was with an FMCG company for four years.

He has also worked with ad filmmaking company Channel Nine Entertainment as CEO.
Before joining Amar Ujala, he was in Muscat as CEO of Advertising International Corporation LLC (ADINC) Y&R, a JV between Omzest Group and Young & Rubycam, where he spent a year. He spearheaded the agency becoming a joint venture between Bates Pangulf, to make it part of WPP. Prior to ADINC Y&R, Mutreja headed the Rajasthan circle for Dainik Bhaskar, looking after all functions of the daily during his tenure of one and a half years.
