In 1994, Bombay (now Mumbai) was a city of transformation. It was bustling with mill workers transitioning to a service-driven economy, Bollywood producing larger-than-life stories, and a growing appetite for cosmopolitan culture. The city was beginning to embrace liberalization, with new malls, fast-food outlets, and international brands making their debut. Yet, it retained its quintessential charm of local trains, chawls, and street vendors, blending tradition with the dawn of modernity. Bombay Times entered the scene at this juncture, capturing and chronicling the spirit of a city on the cusp of change.

Bombay Times, on 20th December 2024, celebrated its 30th anniversary, marking three decades of reshaping lifestyle and entertainment journalism in India. Established as a supplement to The Times of India, Bombay Times became synonymous with capturing the vibrant pulse of Mumbai’s entertainment, fashion, and cultural scenes.

Under the leadership of founding editor Bachi Karkaria, Bombay Times pioneered the concept of lifestyle supplements in Indian media. Karkaria’s visionary approach bridged hard news with aspirational stories about Bollywood, high society, and urban lifestyles, laying the groundwork for what would become a definitive cultural voice.

Reflecting on this journey, Madhureeta Mukherjee, the current editor of Bombay Times, said, “Bombay Times has always been more than a publication; it’s a storyteller of the city’s dynamic energy. Over the years, we’ve embraced change while staying true to our roots, capturing the essence of Mumbai as it evolved.”

Among its many milestones, Bombay Times made a mark with bold initiatives like introducing Page 3 culture, which celebrated the glamour of high society and the entertainment industry. Its coverage of the mid-90s Bollywood boom, fashion’s rising influence, and aspirational lifestyles set a new benchmark in journalism.

A standout story remains the paper's coverage of Mumbai’s nightlife transformation, from the emergence of clubbing culture to the ongoing debates about nightlife policies. The publication’s fearless stance on social and cultural trends continues to resonate with readers.

Bombay Times has done more than just report—it has created a platform where Mumbai’s eclectic vibe thrives. From promoting grassroots artists to spotlighting the city’s unsung heroes, the publication has played a pivotal role in nurturing Mumbai’s identity.

The recent 30th-anniversary celebrations included a street carnival outside The Times of India office, immersing visitors in a nostalgic journey through three decades of entertainment and culture. The release of a special issue further underscored the paper’s legacy, revisiting untold stories from the 90s and reflecting on how Bombay Times shaped the lifestyle media landscape.

As it steps into the future, Bombay Times remains a testament to the evolving aspirations of its readers, continuing to mirror the city’s heartbeat while setting new benchmarks in journalism.
