The cryptic message received on Whatsapp left me shocked – everyone’s beloved Kalyan da had passed away. Kalyan Kar was many things – a veteran journalist, a bridge between old school print journalism and new age digital journalism, mentor extraordinaire, an Editor with a sharp eye, a generous leader who was ever encouraging to fledgling journalists like me.

So, the news of his passing away due to health issues in his hometown Kolkata on February 7, 2025 left not just me, but everyone who knew him utterly shocked.

The passing away of Kalyan da, as he was affectionately called, is not just a tremendous loss to the news media industry, but a deeply personal one for me as well. He was more than an editor – he was a mentor who shaped my early years in journalism.
