It was during a rain-soaked drive in Mumbai that Rohini Iyer found the name that would come to define her legacy. “Let’s call it Raindrop Media,” she said, a fleeting thought that carried the weight of ambition. Still in her teens, already armed with internships in TV production and journalism, Iyer had set her sights on transforming Bollywood’s fragmented publicity ecosystem into a professional, structured industry.
In the early 2000s, celebrity publicity in India was largely informal, handled by assistants, reliant on goodwill, and bereft of strategy. Iyer recognised both the chaos and the opportunity. Her conviction crystallised when filmmaker Farah Khan chose Raindrop Media to manage publicity for Main Hoon Na. The timing was poetic—this was just as she had formally registered the company. That single decision launched Raindrop into the corridors of influence.
Momentum followed swiftly. Mani Ratnam’s Yuva and MF Husain’s Meenaxi expanded the young agency’s portfolio, and Iyer’s reputation as a strategist with instinctive understanding of stardom began to grow. When her co-founder exited within a year, she took full control, steering Raindrop into an elite position at the intersection of cinema, celebrity, and brand building. Over two decades, she would work with an enviable roster: Priyanka Chopra Jonas, Shahid Kapoor, and multiple generations of India’s most bankable stars.
The agency she built soon evolved beyond its original mandate. Raindrop Media became the Rain Reign Group, a powerhouse comprising four companies specialising in brand and reputation management, digital strategy, talent cultivation, and advisory for celebrity-led ventures in fashion and lifestyle. Iyer’s mantra shifted from building brands to “building empires,” reimagining her role not just as a publicist, but as an entrepreneur shaping the future of Indian entertainment.
Her ambition now stretches beyond India’s borders. With Rain Reign Talent, she aims to place Indian actors and creators on the global stage, matching them with opportunities that expand their cultural footprint. Parallelly, she is preparing to enter OTT and production, determined to tell Indian stories that travel, stories that resist the reductive tag of “Bollywood.” “I hate the word Bollywood,” she says. “I want to be a global change-maker in the world of entertainment, and put India on the map.”
What sets Iyer apart is her ability to blend instinct with strategy. She operates at the delicate intersection of celebrity image and business imperatives, understanding that stardom is both art and enterprise. For her, building a career is about curating a public narrative while safeguarding personal authenticity, a balance that has made her the go-to confidante for many of India’s biggest names.
Two decades on, the rain-soaked idea has grown into a full-fledged empire. The young woman who once dreamed of professionalising film publicity now commands an enterprise that shapes conversations, careers, and cultural perception. And yet, she remains restless, always scanning the horizon for the next frontier.
For Rohini Iyer, the journey from Raindrop to Rain Reign is more than a business story, it is a lesson in reinvention, resilience and the power of a singular vision pursued without compromise.
