'Attention' is the hottest commodity in today's digital-first era, and brands are finally realising that the real gold isn’t just in partnering with creators for reels, but in the lively chatter happening in the comment sections below. Scroll through any viral post, and you’ll likely spot a brand dropping a comment sharper than a clever punchline. These aren’t just casual remarks—they’re strategic moves in the game of audience engagement.

Proactive commenting on influencers' posts has evolved into a digital billboard, with brands turning witty comments into marketing gold.

According to Hootsuite’s Social Trends 2025 report, 41% of organisations are leveraging proactive commenting as a strategic tool, capitalising on the visibility algorithms reward for timely engagement.

Comments posted within 24 hours of a creator’s post going live enjoy better reach, with the sweet spot for performance being concise remarks between 10-99 characters. The real magic, though, happens when creators respond to these comments—engagement rates jump by 1.6 times, turning a simple interaction into a multiplier effect.

Nano- and micro-influencers, who typically boast 1,000 to 50,000 followers, are the most responsive to these interactions, offering brands a fertile ground for meaningful engagement.

Comments: The new digital billboards for brands

“The comments section is where the wisdom of the crowd gets distilled,” says Kalyan Kumar, Co-Founder and CEO, KlugKlug. "In the bustling marketplace of social media, the comments section has evolved into a vibrant town square—where consumers, sceptics, and loyalists gather to share their unfiltered thoughts."

Once overlooked, this space has grown into a powerful reflection of public sentiment, often more influential than the post itself. "Here, consumers validate—or dismantle—a brand's claims, offering a pulse-check on public sentiment. From endorsing a product's effectiveness to calling out greenwashing, these conversations reveal a level of authenticity that curated posts often lack," Kumar adds.

Brands can no longer hide behind polished ads. The comments section is now a stage for transparency, accountability, and real-time dialogue.

As Kumar puts it, "By leaning into this dialogue, brands can transform the comments section from a potential minefield into a platform for transparency and connection. It’s not just about speaking; it’s about listening—and the comments section is where that conversation begins."

What works for brands?

Shan Jain, Independent Director, Brand Strategist, and Marketing Transformation Advisor calls this trend, ‘hyper-contextual and participatory marketing’ or moment marketing 2.0. "Why this works is because it is conversational marketing that allows authenticity. And in a world of social media, you’re only as interesting as your last comment," she said.

Brands that succeed in this space go beyond generic responses. Take Amul, for example. When a creator shared a reel of butter sculptures, Amul jumped in with, “We’re hiring – bring your knife and imagination!” The witty comment not only aligned with the brand’s persona but also garnered significant traction. As Shan aptly puts it, “Comments are the new ad space—and if we make them witty and memorable, they can take you farther than 1,000 impressions.”

Cracking the code of proactive commenting

The key to unlocking the full potential of comments lies in how creators respond. "A creator's response to a brand's comment can significantly amplify engagement by bringing in accentuated reach," explains Kruthika Ravindran, Director - Key Accounts, TheSmallBigIdea.

"When a creator interacts with comments, it validates the brand's effort and further encourages their fans/followers to engage with the brand as well," she says.

While brands can’t control a creator’s response, they can encourage it with personalised comments or open-ended questions. To stay agile in the fast-paced market, brands often use pre-approved templates for common scenarios.

“This ensures prompt responses without sacrificing authenticity. These templates can be customized to align with the brand’s voice, allowing for meaningful interactions within the crucial 24-hour window," Ravindran added.

As social media continues to evolve, so do the ways brands engage with audiences. Proactive commenting is no longer just a tactic; it’s a strategy that blends immediacy, relevance, and relatability. It’s a conversation starter, a trust builder, and, ultimately, a tool for connection.
