State-owned telecom operator Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) is gearing up to launch its own digital payments service, BSNL Pay, powered by the BHIM UPI framework. Unlike standalone apps, the service will be integrated directly into BSNL’s Selfcare app, enabling customers to recharge, pay bills, and transfer money within the existing platform.
“BSNL Pay – Coming Soon! A new digital step by BSNL. Now UPI payments will be Secure | Swift | Smart, directly through the BSNL Selfcare App, powered by BHIM,” the BSNL UP (East) Circle posted on X. While an official launch date has not been disclosed, the move underscores the operator’s renewed push towards digital services.
The announcement follows a rare financial turnaround for the PSU. BSNL posted a net profit of ₹280 crore in the March 2025 quarter, its second consecutive profitable quarter in 18 years. Chairman and MD A Robert J Ravi attributed the revival to professional management, government backing, and a sharper focus on efficiency.
With BSNL Pay in the pipeline, alongside its 4G and 5G rollout plans, the company appears to be consolidating its comeback in India’s competitive telecom ecosystem.
