Meta has won its prolonged legal challenge with the US Federal Trade Commission after a judge ruled that the company does not hold a monopoly in the social networking market.
The decision issued by Judge James Boasberg of the US District Court in Washington, D.C., brings an end to a case that began five years ago and went to trial seven months ago. The FTC had argued that Meta should not have been allowed to acquire Instagram in 2012 and WhatsApp in 2014, claiming the purchases gave the company an unlawful dominance over platforms used for sharing content with friends and family.

In his memorandum opinion, Judge Boasberg said the agency had failed to prove that Meta currently holds monopoly power. The ruling means the government’s attempt to unwind Meta’s two major acquisitions has been dismissed.
The FTC did not challenge the deals at the time they were completed but sued in 2020, alleging that Meta’s control over social networking services harmed competition.
