Online gaming platform Mobile Premier League (MPL) is reportedly set to lay off nearly 60% of its staff in in India. The move comes in response to the government’s ban on paid online gaming.

According to media report, MPL sent out an internal staff email on Sunday. In the mail, MPL CEO Sai Srinivas reportedly wrote that the company has decided to downsize India Team “significantly”. This mail does not specify any number.

A media report however quoted a company source as saying that it would let go of roughly 300 of its 500 India staff in divisions like marketing, finance, operations, engineering and legal,” stated a media report.

"India accounted for 50 per cent of M-League's revenues and this change would mean that we would no longer be making any revenue from India in the near future," the mail reportedly mentioned.

India's Parliament last month passed the Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Bill, 2025, banning real-money online games to combat addiction and financial risks. Both Indian and offshore operators are also set to be hit hard by the Bill’s advertising ban. Section 6 categorically prohibits all ads for money games. Breaking this rule could land offenders with up to two years in jail and fines as high as ₹50 lakh.
