India’s streaming (OTT) sector continues to expand, driven by cheaper mobile data, wider smartphone adoption and rising demand for online video content.
A report by brokerage CLSA said India now has around 1.45 billion monthly active users (MAUs) across OTT platforms. This is up 20% over the past three years and 2% in the last year. The report also noted that many users use more than one streaming service, so audience numbers often overlap.
Smartphone users in India are expected to grow nearly 20% to 885 million by FY28, supporting further growth in streaming services.
YouTube remains the largest platform with 772 million users, followed by JioHotstar with 390 million. Among other services, Netflix has 92 million users, ahead of Amazon Prime Video at 67 million. MX Player has 78 million users, though its numbers have declined in recent years.
The report also said ZEE5 is focusing on subscription-led and local content strategies, which is helping improve its revenue and profitability.
