Instagram head Adam Mosseri has offered fresh insight into how the platform ranks posts and distributes content. He shared these details during a recent appearance on the Mixed Signals podcast, where he discussed how Instagram’s approach compares with rival platform TikTok.

According to Mosseri, Instagram does not rely on a single universal algorithm. Instead, it uses multiple ranking systems tailored to different surfaces within the app, including Feed, Reels, Stories and Explore. He explained that when a post is published, it is typically shown to a limited initial audience, allowing Instagram to assess how users respond to it. If early engagement signals, such as watch time, saves or shares, are positive, the system gradually expands the post’s reach to more users. Mosseri likened this process to an “audition”, while clarifying that the term is a conceptual explanation rather than a formal technical one.

He also emphasised that visibility on Instagram is not dictated by follower count alone. Performance, he noted, plays a central role in how content travels across the platform. Posts from accounts with smaller followings can still achieve significant reach if they resonate with early viewers, reinforcing Instagram’s focus on audience response rather than creator size.

Importantly, Mosseri emphasised that Instagram’s recommendation systems are context-specific. Each surface within the app evaluates content differently, based on how users typically engage in that space. As a result, a post’s performance on Reels may not mirror how it performs in Feed or Stories, with ranking models adapting to individual user behaviour over time.

These remarks come amid ongoing scrutiny from creators seeking greater clarity on how social media algorithms function. While Mosseri offered increased transparency around Instagram’s approach, he maintained that there is no fixed formula governing reach. Distribution, he explained, is shaped by a combination of user behaviour, content performance and viewing context.

Taken together, Mosseri’s comments mark another step towards greater openness around Instagram’s ranking systems, even as the platform reiterates that visibility is not dictated by a single rule. Instead, distribution continues to evolve, shaped by how users interact with content and by intensifying competition in the short-form video space.
