The government is reportedly exploring changes to the IT Rules, 2021, to bring films released on OTT platforms under a formal certification framework. According to a media report, the move follows controversy surrounding the release of Satluj, which premiered on a streaming platform.

According to media reports, which cite sources, the government is evaluating a proposal that would make certification and approval from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) mandatory before films can be released digitally. Implementing such a mechanism would require amendments to the existing IT Rules.

At present, films released on OTT platforms are not governed by CBFC certification requirements, unlike theatrical releases.
