In an effort to improve user privacy, Google is introducing Temporary Chats, a new feature for its Gemini chatbot. The function, which was unveiled in August and is already accessible on the mobile app and a few web clients, allows users to have one-time discussions that end automatically after 72 hours.

Google claims that Temporary Chats are not used to train AI models or customize responses, and they are not visible in Recent Chats or Gemini Apps Activity. Rather, Gemini will respond with generic responses, much like it would if a user had no recorded preferences. The communication cannot be retrieved after the chat window has been closed.

The tool has limits even if it is intended for customers who are concerned about their privacy. Users are unable to provide feedback on responses in this mode, and conversations cannot be saved for later use.

How to Use Gemini Temporary Chats

  • Make sure the most recent version of the Gemini app is installed before opening it.
  • Tap the hamburger menu in the upper left corner of the conversation window.
  • Next to "New Chat," you'll find the Temporary Chat option.
  • To initiate a conversation that will end after 72 hours, tap the chat bubble icon.

Personal Context mode, which operates in the opposite manner, was introduced alongside Temporary Chats. Temporary Chats guarantee that nothing is saved, giving users the option to choose between total privacy and personalization, while Personal Context enables Gemini to leverage previous talks to customize answers and recommendations.

By making this upgrade, Google is presenting Gemini as a smart assistant that also deeply respects customer privacy.
