With a strong emphasis on artificial intelligence and interactive learning, Google is getting ready to release significant upgrades to its Translate app. A new Practice Mode, which aims to gamify language learning and establish the app as a direct rival to Duolingo, is the most noteworthy feature.

Users can first practice customized lessons in Spanish and French with this functionality. After selecting their level of skill, which ranges from beginner to advanced, learners can choose from real-life scenarios like greetings, ordering food and beverages, or requesting directions. Additionally, users will be able to design their own practice sessions, selecting speaking and listening activities.

Google is launching a redesigned user interface in addition to gamified lessons. Users will be able to save frequently used translations with a new bookmark function, and the voice input button will be repositioned to the right-hand side for quicker access. To enhance navigation, a simplified row of icons for the handwriting, paste, and microphone operations is also being introduced.

A model selector has been added, which is another significant change. Users will have the option of selecting an Advanced model powered by Gemini, which is intended for accuracy and contextual understanding, or a Fast model, which is aimed for speed and efficiency. Although only English–French and English–Spanish are supported at the moment by the Advanced model, this is anticipated to change in the future.

These modifications are part of Google's larger AI effort in language technology, which builds on new developments like YouTube auto-dubbing and live translation demonstrations on smart glasses. These upgrades have transformed Google Translate from a translation tool into a learning aid that bridges the gap between human communication and machine translation.
