  • Anthropic has suspended global access to its advanced AI models, Fable 5 and Mythos 5, following a US government directive related to national security concerns.
  • The US government mandated the suspension for all foreign users, including foreign national employees of Anthropic, without providing detailed evidence for the security issues.
  • Anthropic stated that its other AI systems, including the Claude models, will continue to operate normally and expressed its intention to resolve the situation and restore access.
  • The company challenged the government's concerns, arguing that the evidence for the potential security risk was limited and did not justify the suspension of widely used models.

AI firm Anthropic announced on Friday that it will immediately suspend global access to its most advanced models, Fable 5 and Mythos 5, following a US government directive citing national security concerns.

Anthropic said the US government had directed it to block access to Fable 5 and Mythos 5 for foreign users under export control rules, despite not sharing detailed proof of the alleged security concerns. In response, the company said it would suspend access to the models for all users worldwide, while clarifying that its other AI systems would continue to operate normally.

"The US government, citing national security authorities, has issued an export control directive to suspend all access to Fable 5 and Mythos 5 by any foreign national, whether inside or outside the United States, including foreign national Anthropic employees. The net effect of this order is that we must abruptly disable Fable 5 and Mythos 5 for all our customers to ensure compliance. Access to all other Claude models is not affected. We apologize for this disruption to our customers. We believe this is a misunderstanding and are working to restore access as soon as possible," read a social media post from the company.

According to Anthropic, US officials expressed concerns that Fable 5’s safety mechanisms could potentially be bypassed, enabling it to assist in discovering software flaws. The company challenged this assessment, stating that the evidence presented was limited to an unverified, specific jailbreak scenario and did not warrant shutting down a widely deployed commercial model serving hundreds of millions of users.

“We disagree that the finding of a narrow potential jailbreak should be cause for recalling a commercial model deployed at scale,” the company said, adding that it is working with the government to restore access as soon as possible.
