Atal Bihari Vajpayee, the first non-Congress leader to have completed a full term as Prime Minister, passed away at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences on August 16, 2018. He was 93.
Many journalists who had interacted with Atal Bihari Vajpayee paid their condolences.
“I once told Vajpayee I’d never voted for him. He squirmed in mock horror and said, “Abhi kuchch aur mashaqqat karni padegi,” (I’ll need to slog harder). Here was a PM you could tell you didn’t vote for, and it didn’t affect the trust, affection and time he gave you. RIP,” tweeted Shekhar Gupta, President, Editors Guild Of India, while remembering him. 
“If we want to remember Atal ji, we should try to absorb some of that civility, inclusiveness into our own discourse and conduct in public life,” said Arun Shourie, a former Journalist and one-time influential BJP leader who was also a Minister of Communications and Information Technology in the Atal Bihari Vajpayee government.
“Today India has lost a great statesman and visionary. Beyond that, AB Vajpayee was a fine human being with a sense of humour and brought gentleness in politics which is missing today,” tweeted Aroon Purie, chairman and editor-in-chief of the India Today Group.
“One of the most remarkable politicians of the post Independence era, Atal Bihari Vajpayee has passed away.. great parliamentarian, ideal coalition era PM, and a statesman orator, poet politician for the ages. #Atalji RIP,” said journalist Rajdeep Sardesai.
“My Atalji story that will stay with me: how he once told Brajesh Mishra to guide me as to where I could get the best steak in New York! Wonder if any neta would dare to do so now,” he added comparing today’s political atmosphere with Vajpayee’s tenure.

Avinash Pandey of ABP News Network tweeted, "Unforgettable Atal . End of a Yug  #AatalBihariVajpayee"
Barkha Dutt wrote: RIP #AtalBihariVajpayee a rare politician who always spoke of Insaniyat in the toughest and trickiest moments and lived a life that represented that humanism."

Even the sports world deeply mourned his loss.
Sachin Tendulkar tweeted: "India is at a great loss today. Shri #AtalBihariVajpayee ji’s contributions to our nation have been innumerable. Thoughts and prayers go out to his loved ones."

Mary Kom tweeted, "Most of all, you will always be warmed by the thought that once in your life. Millions Salute to you. Great leader with humble advice. #RIPVajpayeeJi #AtaljiForever #AtalBihariVajpayee"
The three-time Prime Minister of India, for 13 days in 1996, 11 months in 1998 to 1999 and then from 1999 to 2004, will be given a state funeral in the national capital on Friday. His body will be taken from his residence at Krishna Menon Marg to the BJP headquarters at Deendayal Upadhyay Marg and from there the funeral procession to Smriti Sthal will begin at 1 pm. His last rites will take place at Smriti Sthal, close to Rajghat, at 5 pm.
“Unfortunately, his condition deteriorated over the last 36 hours and he was put on life support systems. Despite best efforts, we have lost him today. We join the nation in deeply mourning this great loss,” an AIIMS bulletin said. 
In his condolence message, Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted, “It was Atal Ji's exemplary leadership that set the foundations for a strong, prosperous and inclusive India in the 21st century."
The Union Cabinet also announced state mourning for seven days and a half-day Central government holiday on August 17, 2018.
Commenting on the news of his death, President Ram Nath Kovind said, “His leadership, foresight, maturity and eloquence put him in a league of his own. Atalji, the Gentle Giant, will be missed by one and all.”

Vajpayee, the 12-time Parliamentarian, was admitted to AIIMS on June 11. He was diagnosed with chest congestion, kidney tract infection, urinary tract infection and low urine output.
