The AAAI Lifetime Achievement Award, established back in 1988, has always been reserved for people who genuinely move the needle in Indian advertising. This year, the honour goes to someone who has done much more than create memorable campaigns—Prasoon Joshi has shaped the soul of modern Indian communication and has been instrumental in doing some outstanding work for his agency McCann Erickson and their clients.
Prasoon’s journey began in the quiet landscapes of Uttarakhand, a place where art didn’t feel like a separate discipline but part of everyday life. Poetry and music were constants around him, and it’s no surprise that creativity came to him as naturally as breathing. After finishing his MBA from IMT Ghaziabad he stepped into advertising with very little noise and a lot of conviction. His first experience at Trikaya Grey during a summer training stint in the early ’90s gave him a small glimpse of the world he was about to enter.
His real break came in 1992 at Ogilvy & Mather in Delhi. He started off as a young writer still finding his rhythm, but he moved quickly and by 1994 he was already a Senior Writer. He shaped the voices of brands like Eno, Rath Vanaspati, Modi Tyres, Dabur Amla Kesh Nikhar, and later Kelvinator and Nokia. At Ogilvy, he was fortunate to learn under two towering creative figures: Suresh Mullick, who gave him discipline and rigour, and Piyush Pandey, who recognised something special in him and brought him to Mumbai. That shift to Mumbai, the city where ideas never sleep, played a huge role in sharpening his creative instincts.
The turning point in his career came in 2002 when he chose to join McCann Erickson as its National Creative Director. At the time, the agency wasn’t known for creative fireworks, but Prasoon saw potential where others perhaps didn’t. He once said he took the job because he felt he was being handed a blank canvas. And he did paint that boldly, thoughtfully, and with a level of emotional intelligence rarely seen in advertising. He focused his energy on a few major brands like Coca-Cola, Nestlé, Perfetti, and Johnson & Johnson, and slowly but surely, McCann began producing work that resonated deeply with people. Under his leadership, the agency’s creative reputation didn’t just improve but it transformed.
Even as advertising embraced him, Bollywood found a voice in him. Prasoon’s lyrics have a way of lingering long after the music fades. His work in films like Rang De Basanti, Taare Zameen Par, Fanaa, and Delhi-6 connected with audiences because they came from a place of honesty. His writing has never tried to be clever for its own sake; it has always tried to say something genuine, and people responded to that.
It was no surprise when the Government of India honoured him with the Padma Shri, acknowledging his contribution not just to advertising, but to art, culture, and storytelling at large. Few writers manage to influence so many spaces at once, and even fewer do it with the grace, honesty and authenticity that Prasoon brings.
This latest honour from the AAAI comes at a meaningful moment. With the recent Omnicom consolidation, Prasoon now takes on the role of Chairman of Omnicom Advertising India. The market is challenging, fast-changing, and full of fierce competition. But it is also full of possibility, and if anyone can guide a group with clarity and creative ambition, it is someone who has spent his entire life turning ideas into impact.
Prasoon Joshi’s career has never been about chasing recognition—but this one is truly well-deserved.
