Meta, the parent company of Facebook, Instagram, and Threads, is preparing to introduce ads to its text-based social app Threads in early 2025.

As reported by Seeking Alpha, Instagram's ad unit will lead this monetization effort, beginning with a select group of advertisers gaining access in January. This marks Threads' initial move toward revenue generation since its launch in July 2023.

The platform has already seen substantial growth, amassing over 174 million monthly active users within its first year. Threads was developed to complement Instagram by providing a space for text-based, idea-driven communication, emphasizing a positive user experience. In Meta's words, the goal was to "take what Instagram does best and expand that to text," a vision Meta reiterated in its recent blog posts about Threads’ development.

Meta's upcoming ad rollout aligns with its broader focus on revenue growth. In its latest earnings report on October 30, Meta reported a 7% year-over-year increase in ad impressions, though this is down from a peak of 21% last year, reflecting a maturing advertising ecosystem. Ad revenue reached $39.9 billion in Q3, up from $33.6 billion the previous year, illustrating Meta's significant emphasis on scaling ad revenue. Notably, Meta is considering options that align Threads with broader industry shifts, potentially integrating interactive and personalized ad formats, such as native ads or sponsored posts, that mirror its ad strategy across Instagram and Facebook.

Additionally, Meta's ad plans come as it adapts to regulatory demands, notably in the EU. On November 12, Meta announced that it would offer ad-free subscriptions for European users of Facebook and Instagram, allowing a choice between personalized, ad-based experiences or ad-free options. This decision reflects Meta’s ongoing balancing act between monetization and user experience as it expands across platforms like Threads.

The ad introduction on Threads suggests Meta may draw on successful ad formats from its other platforms, potentially including native ads and interactive experiences, as well as detailed targeting capabilities. However, Threads' ad strategy will need to tread carefully, keeping in mind its user base's preference for an unintrusive, text-focused environment.
