According to the Nielsen//NetRatings Global Internet Trends report for the first quarter of 2001, about 429 million people in 27 nations have Internet access. The report states that US and Canada still account for the largest proportion of the world's Internet access with 41 per cent of the global audience located in these countries. About 27 per cent of the total net users are in Europe, the Middle East and Africa, followed by the Asia-Pacific region's 20 per cent and 4 per cent in Latin America.

In terms of penetration, about 50 per cent of the homes in the US have Internet access, while one-third of Asia-Pacific households are Net-equipped. Meanwhile, just over one-quarter of European homes have online access.

According to the report, a sizable jump was recorded in the number of Net-accessed homes in Europe and the Asia-Pacific region in the past year. Looking ahead, another 9 per cent of European households and 12 per cent of Asia-Pacific households plan on acquiring Internet access in the next 12 months.

In Asia Pacific, South Korea accounts for 45 per cent of the wired homes. Together, South Korea, Taiwan and Australia account for 86 per cent of the total number of people with home PC Internet access in that region.
