Accidentally on Purpose: How Seema Found Her Calling
Seema refers to herself as an “accidental PR professional.” Her childhood dream was to become a doctor. But when that didn’t work out, she pivoted to hospitality and graduated from IHM-Pusa, New Delhi. Her career began in 1989, in hotel sales and marketing with a five-star French hotel chain, followed by The Oberoi Group. She later pursued a Master’s in Advertising and Marketing to deepen her marketing skills.
Like many working women, Seema took a brief maternity leave and when she returned to work she was offered a promotion with a relocation, which she had to turn down since it was not feasible for her to move to another city at that juncture. Hence, she switched to consulting for brands across hospitality, health & fitness, technology, etc. By 1996, eager to return to corporate life, she found her way into PR and Corporate Communications at Ranbaxy.
From Hospitality to Healthcare
The transition from hospitality to the pharmaceutical industry was significant and unfamiliar. But Seema took on the challenge with conviction. The late Ranjana Smetacek, then Head of Corporate Communications at Ranbaxy, saw potential in Seema’s marketing and advertising experience and invited her to join her team.
“Though I was new to corporate communications, I was always drawn to science and the idea of working in a field that impacts lives. Ranjana’s belief in me gave me the confidence to explore this new path,” Seema recalls.
Seema credits her success to her learnings at Ranbaxy, where she started as an internal communication lead in 1996, but moved up the ladder as she honed her skills at writing & publishing, built media relationships and dabbled in the area of digital communication. To strengthen her expertise, she also pursued a postgraduate PR course from the London School of Public Relations, through Genesis School of communications.
“My 11+ years tenure at Ranbaxy taught me the fundamentals of corporate brand building. Understanding the pharma industry and business of the Company helped me shape an authentic brand narrative. Collaboration and people management helped me build and lead high performing teams. The relationships I built remain strong even today—testament to the lasting impact of a shared vision and collaborative success,” she says.
She proudly recalls being the “Chief Storyteller” for Ranbaxy from the late ’90s to mid-2000s, building a strong global reputation for brand Ranbaxy.
Leadership Across India’s Pharma Powerhouses
From Ranbaxy to Lupin, Jubilant Bhartia Group to Biocon—Seema has led communications for some of India’s most prestigious pharma and life sciences companies.
Elaborating about her leadership roles at organizations like Ranbaxy, Lupin, and Jubilant Bhartia Group, Biocon, Seema acknowledged, “My leadership roles across the pharma and life sciences industry have profoundly shaped my communications philosophy. Working in publicly listed, pharma companies taught me how to navigate the highly regulated landscape for building the brand, which drove my decision of leveraging owned and earned media channels to build and sustain corporate reputation effectively.”
“During my 11+ years at Ranbaxy (1996–2007), I worked on many global projects, including launching India’s first generic pharma product in the US. I was a part of several cross-functional teams and collaborated across HR, Finance, R&D, IT, and Supply Chain, functions, learning from several legendary visionary leaders. Ranbaxy’s pioneering culture gave me deep insights into the pharma industry across world markets including the US, Europe & LatAm, Ahuja said, narrating her time and growth at Ranbaxy.
“At Lupin, transparency and authenticity were key in transforming brand perception. Working closely with the leadership, I repositioned Lupin as a research driven international pharma company with a strong portfolio of generics and specialty pharma. Strategic communication and relationship-building helped elevate the brand reputation, especially during several international acquisitions,” she mentions.
At Jubilant Bhartia Group, she led corporate marketing for life Sciences and drove Corporate Brand Identity Development across diverse sectors like life sciences, food, retail, energy, and aerospace. Leading strategic communication for IPOs, global rebranding, mergers, demergers, expanded her ability to align enterprise & group-level communication imperatives.
At Biocon, as part of the Executive Leadership team (ELT), she gained deep insights into boardroom dynamics and decision making. She has been playing a critical role as an ELT member since 2019, enabling the CEO of Biocon Biologics to drive the company. She has worked closely with the Chairperson to build a strong reputation for Brand Biocon globally and has also supported her for many innovative business ideas incubated at her office, including initiatives involving startups.
“My focus at Biocon has been to establish a purpose-driven narrative that highlights our biotech leadership, science led journey, human impact, and commitment to enable the right to health for patients by expanding equitable access to lifesaving medicines across global markets through earned, owned, and social media,” she says.
In every role at these leading brands, she has brought clarity, integrity, and a deep understanding of science and storytelling to build a strong and credible brand reputation.
Building Teams That Define Industry Standards
When Seema joined Biocon in 2011, she had a team of just three people, which grew to 30+ by 2024. Today, her Global Communications team has outstanding talent spanning corporate communications, PR, internal communication, digital, content writing, social media, brand, and marketing—servicing both Biocon and Biocon Biologics.
The team has been consistently ranked among the Top 15 Corporate Communications Teams in India since 2017 and climbed to #2 in 2025.
“The success of the team lies in their passion and commitment,” she says. “I believe in nurturing talent, guiding individuals to strive for excellence, and providing them with opportunities to learn, grow, and innovate. I encourage experimentation, and, most importantly, collaboration over competition.”
Seema’s leadership style is inclusive, objective, and open. She encourages experimentation, respects diversity of ideas, and ensures that every team member gets fair opportunities to grow and lead.
“I believe in fostering a culture that breeds a shared sense of purpose and motivates the team for collective success,” she adds.
Championing Causes and Creating Social Impact
Seema has always used communication as a tool for social change. At Ranbaxy, she worked closely with the Ranbaxy Science Foundation and Ranbaxy Community Healthcare Services. At Biocon, she leads CSR communications and supports two not for profit entities Biocon Foundation and Biocon Academy.
She has played a pivotal role in establishing Biocon Academy, a CSR initiative of the Company, as a member of the Core team, since 2013 and continues to drive building reputation for the Brand.
She also played a foundational role in B.PAC (Bangalore Political Action Committee), which focuses on good governance, civic activism, and youth leadership. She helped shape its communication strategy, mobilize public opinion, and engage with stakeholders and civil society.
Beyond her corporate responsibilities, she actively volunteers with organisations that support senior citizens and underprivileged children. She is deeply committed to using her communication as a catalyst for positive change, community empowerment and societal progress.
