The Washington Post has named Annah Aschbrenner as Senior Editor on the Hub, tasking her with driving news coverage across the newsroom and strengthening its breaking news operations.
The announcement was made by Managing Editor Jason Anders, who described Aschbrenner as a “dynamic editor” who has been at the centre of some of the publication’s most significant stories. In her new role, she will lead a team of breaking news reporters and collaborate closely with coverage leaders to ensure timely, high-impact journalism on the day’s most important developments.
Aschbrenner will also play a key role in shaping the Post’s coverage strategy around major news moments, working alongside audience teams to identify opportunities where the organisation can maximise impact and expand reach.
Most recently, she served as Deputy White House Editor, where she helped guide coverage of President Donald Trump’s second term. Her editorial leadership contributed to several major stories, including reporting on internal developments within the Heritage Foundation, donor dynamics surrounding Trump’s inaugural committee, and evolving shifts within the MAGA movement.
She also oversaw The Washington Post’s live coverage on the night Trump was shot, with reporting from that period and its aftermath going on to win the 2025 Pulitzer Prize for Breaking News. Aschbrenner joined The Washington Post in 2022 as Congress Editor.
Prior to this, she worked at USA Today, where she led coverage of the White House, Congress and national politics, including the 2020 election. She also spent six years at the Des Moines Register, directing reporting across politics, metro, investigations, business and features.
Aschbrenner began her journalism career as a high school news clerk at the Muskegon Chronicle in Michigan.
She assumes her new role with immediate effect, with further details on her team expected to be announced soon.
