After months of interim leadership, Life Corporation of India (LIC) appointed R Doraiswamy as its new Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director, under LIC’s reworked leadership model having a three-year term.
The appointment signifies a structural shift in the company based on the amendment of LIC Act, 2021. As per the amended act, the roles of CEO and MD are combined into a single role, making it a more accountable yet executive post.
Doraiswamy joined LIC in 1986, bringing 38 years of experience to the company. He has experience in training, group plans, pensions, marketing, IT, and operations. He was managing director of the Southern Zone before being promoted.
Doraiswamy will serve a three-year term or until he turns 62 (August 28, 2028), whichever comes first, according to confirmation from the Department of Financial Services. The Cabinet's Appointments Committee authorized his nomination on the Financial Services Institutions Bureau's (FSIB) proposal.
Doraiswamy, a Madurai Kamaraj University graduate in mathematics and a Fellow of the Insurance Institute of India, assumes leadership at a time when LIC is adjusting to the reality of the post-IPO market, growing competition, and demands for increased transparency and shareholder value.
As LIC navigates its next stage of development, his leadership provides stability, domain competence, and a continuity of vision—all of which are essential.
