Former Tesla AI Director Andrej Karpathy joins Anthropic

- Andrej Karpathy has announced his new position at Anthropic via a statement on his X account, expressing excitement about returning to research and development in AI.
- Karpathy is a founding member of OpenAI and previously worked there as a research scientist from 2015 to 2017.
- After his time at OpenAI, he served as Director of Artificial Intelligence at Tesla from 2017 until July 2022, and briefly returned to OpenAI in February 2023 before leaving again in February 2024.
- In July 2024, he launched Eureka Labs, an educational venture focused on artificial intelligence.
Andrej Karpathy has joined Anthropic, according to a statement posted on his X account.
Karpathy, a founding member of the artificial intelligence research group OpenAI and a research scientist there between 2015 and 2017, said he is “very excited to join the team” and return to R&D, describing the coming years at the frontier of large language models as “formative”.

After his initial stint at OpenAI, Karpathy joined Tesla in 2017 as Director of Artificial Intelligence. He left Tesla in July 2022. He later returned to OpenAI in February 2023, before departing again in February 2024.
In July 2024, Karpathy announced the launch of Eureka Labs, an AI-focused education venture.
