Mrinank Sharma, who led the Safeguards Research Team at Anthropic, has resigned from the company, citing broader global risks that extend beyond artificial intelligence and bioweapons.
In a post on X, Sharma shared a letter explaining his decision, saying the “world is in peril” due to a “whole series of interconnected crises unfolding” simultaneously.
“I’ve decided to leave Anthropic… I’ve achieved what I wanted to here,” he wrote, reflecting on his move to San Francisco two years ago after completing his PhD to work in AI safety.
Sharma highlighted his contributions during his tenure, including research into AI sycophancy and its causes, development of safeguards to reduce risks from AI-assisted bioterrorism, deployment of those defences into production systems, and authoring one of the early AI safety cases.
His departure comes amid growing global debate over the societal and security implications of rapidly advancing AI technologies.
