Rewind 2012: The Entourage of Indian television

As the year 2012 draws to an end, we attempt to bring the stars of Hindi television to the fore Entourage style. The American comedy-drama series is known for its array of stars, usually featuring at least two celebrities per episode… exchange4media takes a look at the top 10 television celebrities of 2012, followed by top show hosts (non cinema), courtesy Alchemist Talent Tracker (ATT).

Fiction shows in the Hindi GEC space have managed to fascinate viewers since the longest time known. Though there are different key elements that contribute to the popularity of a show, the audience connect with a particular character cannot be overlooked. Furthermore, it has been observed that though in some cases a show might not perform according to expectations, there are certain characters which in a matter of time become a household name.

Top ten television celebrities of 2012 (Fiction shows)

1. Sakshi Tanwar
At first position is Sakshi Tanwar who plays the character of Priya Ram Kapoor on the show ‘Bade Achhe Lagte Hain’ of Sony Entertainment Television. Priya is the main female protagonist. Her habits and philosophical advises please Ram even in the most difficult situations. 

2. Ram Kapoor
Ram Kappor plays the character of Ram Amarnath Kapoor on the show ‘Bade Achhe Lagte Hain’ of Sony Entertainment Television. He is the main male protagonist of the drama series who is a very famous business tycoon.

3. Gurmeet Chowdhary
Gurmeet Chowdhary aka Yash Suraj Pratap Sindhia plays the male lead on Zee TV show ‘Punar Vivah’

4. Dayanand Shetty
Dayanand Shetty plays the popular character of Daya on Sony Entertainment Television show CID, since 1998.

5. Hina Khan
Hina Khan, who plays the character of Akshara Naitik Singhania in the show ‘Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai’ aired on Star Plus, occupies the fifth position on the list. Akshara is the princess of Maheshwari family who weds in the Singhania family and faces a lot of hardships.

6. Shivaji Satam
In sixth place is Shivaji Satam who plays the role of ACP Pradyuman on Sony Entertainment Television show CID.

7. Aditya Srivastava
At seventh position is Aditya Srivastava who plays the role of Senior Inspector Abhijeet on CID.

8. Ragini Khanna
Ragini Khanna played the character of Suhana Ishaan Khashyap in the TV show ‘Sasural Genda Phool’ on Star Plus. The last episode was aired on April 21, 2012 and was replaced by new series ‘Ek Doosre Se Karte Hain Pyaar Hum’ from April 23, 2012 onwards.

9. Mona Singh
Mona Singh aka Mona Pradeep Singh plays the female protagonist and wife of Pradeep in fiction show ‘Kya Hua Tera Vaada’ on Sony Entertainment Television.

10. Gia Manek
Rounding off the list is Gia Manek who portrayed the character of Gopi Bahu in ‘Saath Nibhaana Saathiya’ on Star Plus.

What eventually contributes to their popularity quotient is the fact that the viewers also start associating a particular face with the on-screen character. Though the age old question of whether the popularity of a particular character extends itself to the show or a show shapes up the characters remain debatable, there is no doubt that the audience attraction and emotional connect towards a particular television character cannot be denied.

ATT is based on round one results of CelebScore and Alchemist estimates on the popularity of TV stars thereafter. CelebScore is a research on celebrities of almost all established genres. It covers more than 250 odd celebrities and people’s choices of them, representing practically almost all of the country. Since CelebScore round one was done around mid 2012, the estimates include Alchemist estimates thereafter. The CelebScore data was over Hindi Speaking Markets (HSM), 15 years + and SEC ABCD.
