Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos was scheduled to appear before the US Senate on Tuesday to discuss the company’s $82.7 billion plan to acquire Warner Bros Discovery. Senator Mike Lee, chair of the antitrust subcommittee, led the hearing, also including testimony from Warner Bros’ chief strategy officer Bruce Campbell.
Lawmakers questioned Netflix on how the merger could affect competition, consumers, and employees. The US Department of Justice is reviewing the acquisition, which is also being challenged by a rival offer from Paramount Skydance.
Lee raised concerns that Netflix could be using the deal to slow rivals and questioned whether it had accessed sensitive Warner Bros information, giving it a potential edge. Paramount’s CEO David Ellison has suggested his bid may face fewer regulatory hurdles, but Warner Bros has so far rejected offers due to debt risks.
