The lockdown has prompted news channels to seek a waiver of DD Free Dish slot carriage fee. Media reports suggest that the News Broadcasters Association (NBA) has asked the government to waive off the fee in the first quarter and to charge 50% in the next.

The president of the NBA Rajat Sharma in his letter to Information and Broadcasting Minister Prakash Javadekar has apprised him of the expenses incurred by broadcasters during the COVID-19 pandemic.

He writes that the pressure from ad agencies to defer payment to broadcasters is tremendous. These agencies have also been requesting them to allow more time above the 60-day credit period. Broadcasters will be forced to operate at zero or negligible income in the next couple of months, wrote Sharma.

The NBA, which comprises 27 members representing 77 channels, had earlier sought the help of MIB, requesting to defer the payments due to Prasar Bharati for Free Dish carriage fee on March 31 till July 2020.
