Bigg Boss, KBC, MasterChef... Let the 9.00 pm reality-show war begin
The much anticipated reality shows war has finally begun. ‘Bigg Boss’ – Season 4 opened well for Colors and ‘KBC’, again in its fourth season on Sony, managed a good launch for the channel. As the industry waits to see what MasterChef does for Star Plus, media planners give their views on the 9.00 pm war between Bigg Boss and KBC.

With the festive season around the corner, Hindi general entertainment channels have launched a spate of reality shows to attract and retain audiences. The first off the block was ‘Bigg Boss’ Season 4. For this season, Colors roped in actor Salman Khan and the opening ratings were one of the best for the show.
Next on the screens was ‘Kaun Banega Crorepati (KBC)’ with the original host Amitabh Bachchan working his magic for Sony Entertainment Television. Even as KBC opened at lower numbers than Bigg Boss, media planners have pinned high expectations on the show.
STAR Plus’ MasterChef, while not on directly competing slots with ‘KBC’ and ‘Bigg Boss’ too has the industry waiting in anticipation to see what host Akshay Kumar can manage for the channel.
A quick ratings recap --- even though ‘Bigg Boss’ opened on the same day as the CommonWealth Games Delhi opening ceremony, it managed to open with a rating of 6.01 TVR (C&S, 4+, HSM Metros). ‘KBC’s first episode got a rating of 5.3 TVR (C&S, 4+, HSM Metros). As is known, ‘Bigg Boss’ was premiered on a Sunday evening and was a three-hour show, while KBC debuted on a Monday evening as a regular one-hour show.
Speaking on where the shows are headed, Naresh Khetrapal, CEO, Span Communications expected ‘KBC’ to be consistent with its ratings while ‘Bigg Boss’ would see “ups and down based on situations”. He added that the content of KBC is likely to appeal to viewers across India and ‘Bigg Boss’ would have a stronger pull in the metro audience.
Kheterpal predicted an average TVR of 3-4 for ‘KBC’ and 2-3 TVR for ‘Bigg Boss’.
Sanjoy Chakrabarty, CEO, Dentsu Media and CEO, Last Minute Media, is of the opinion that KBC viewership will build up slowly and steadily, as it has a loyal audience base. He said, “In the case of ‘Bigg Boss’, there was an intrigue factor and hence people tuned in.”
Recently, Colors ran into troubled waters with a few cable operators blacking out the channel in certain areas in Mumbai. Since ‘Bigg Boss’ and ‘KBC’ are telecast at the same time, Chakrabarty felt that viewers would have switched to ‘KBC’ and there was a possibility that the game show would have seen a slight hike in its viewership.
The one thing clear is that the 9.00 pm slot is set to see a heated battle on weekends and weekdays, in days to come. With three big screen names in place, it is now on the content alone on what these shows will deliver for the channels.
