Sumit Chakraborty, Sr Journalist and longtime editor of the weekly Mainstream Weekly, passed away late Saturday evening at approximately 10:45 PM in Kolkata. He had been receiving treatment for several health issues and had relocated from Delhi to Kolkata to be close to his family.
Chakraborty was the son of Renu Chakraborty and Nikhil Chakraborty, both prominent figures in the Communist Party of India (CPI). Beyond his journalistic career, he was a committed CPI leader and active participant in the National Federation of Indian Women. He is survived by his wife, Dr. Gargi Chakravartty, an academic and NFIW leader, and their son.
Under his stewardship, Mainstream Weekly earned a reputation for principled journalism and incisive commentary.
