The Indian Readership Survey (IRS) Q1 2019 was released last Friday. In the regional segment, Daily Thanthi has emerged as the most read daily with 24054, 000 Total Readership (TR) whereas Malayala Manorama takes the top spot in terms of AIR (9758,000).

If we focus only on the top 5 dailies list from the west region, the first spot on the TR list went to Lokmat with 19691, 000 TR. That’s an improvement from IRS 2017 where the TR for the daily was 18066, 000.

In terms of most read Marathi newspapers, Daily Sakal took the second spot after Lokmat with 11841 TR. In IRS 2017, it had recorded 10498 TR which means it has managed to increase its readership in last two years. Punya Nagri takes the third spot with 9670 TR, Pudhari takes the fourth spot with 8083 TR and Loksatta is at the fifth position with 4174.

Coming to most read Gujarati dailies, Gujarat Samachar retained its top spot with 11873 TR followed by Sandesh on the second spot with 10375 TR. The latter too stayed put on the second spot. Divya Bhaskar remains on third spot, as IRS 2017, with 8178 TR. Saurashtra Samachar and Kutch Mitra swapped places. In IRS 2019, Saurashtra Samachar managed to topple Kutch Mitra with 766 TR. Kutch Mitra clocked 757 TR as per IRS 2019. In the earlier report, the order was reversed.

Speaking about the achievement, Karan Darda, Executive Director, Lokmat Media Group, told exchange4media, "I am glad that Lokmat has jumped to the 5th position from 6th last time, the only Marathi publication listed in the Top 5 dailies in India (all languages). It clearly shows our readers’ trust, confidence and faith in true journalism. We at Lokmat have always had a pulse of our audience and that is reflected in the fact that we are the No.1 Marathi newspaper in India, No.1 newspaper in Maharashtra and extremely happy to retain the No.1 position in Pune in IRS 2019,Q1."

Lokmat also saw a rise in AIR since IRS 2017. It had recorded 5963, 000 AIR in 2017, which rose to 6085, 000 AIR in 2019.

Rajasthan Patrika takes the sixth position on the Top 20 dailies list (all languages) with 18036, 000 TR. It climbed up one step from the seventh position in IRS 2017 when it had clocked 16326, 000 TR. Rajasthan Patrika's edition, Patrika, moved up the ladder to the 19th position with 9967 000 TR.

A similar trend has been noticed for Gujarat Samachar. The daily moved up one spot to 15th position on all languages TR list with11873, 000 in the latest report. Daily Sakal went up two notches to 16th position with 11841 TR.

Uday Jadhav, CEO, Sakal Media Group, told exchange4media, "The IRS study is important for us to understand the changing dynamics of our readership. Sakal has added 13.43 lakh readers which is a healthy sign for us. It also assures us that our readers are appreciating the innovations and the product development we are doing to deliver the best possible product in the most effective way."

But it needs to be noted here that the ratings might change when data from Hindustan are collated and put together.
