Press Council sets up National Awards for Journalism

Awards will be given in six categories on the occasion of National Press Day every year. Last date for sending nominations is August 16, 2012

Press Council sets up National Awards for Journalism

To encourage the media to pursue its duties following the dictum of ‘Freedom with responsibility’, Press Council of India has instituted National Awards to honour journalists/ photojournalists excelling in print journalism in various fields on the occasion of National Press Day every year.

Nomination is open to all journalists and freelancers of Indian nationality. The nomination has to be made by the editor of the newspaper/ news agency. Last date for sending nominations is August 16, 2012.

Awards will be given away in six categories with the Raja Ram Mohan Roy Award for Excellence in Journalism being the highest award. Following that, there is Award for Rural Journalism, Development Reporting, Stree Shakti and Photo Journalism.

The Press Council of India has been mandated by the Parliament to improve the standards of journalism and maintaining its freedom. This, it has been doing through its adjudications as well as pronouncements and reports on specific issues.
