Comedian Kunal Kamra is at the center of a controversy after Bollywood music label T-Series flagged his stand-up special, Naya Bharat, on YouTube for copyright violations. The video, published on March 23, included a parody segment that referenced Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. According to a YouTube notice shared by Kamra on X (formerly Twitter), the video was blocked due to copyright restrictions, preventing it from generating revenue.
Kunal Kamra stand-up special, released on YouTube on March 23, and the flagged segment involved a parody of "Hawa Hawai" from the 1987 film Mr. India and "Bholi Si Surat" from Dil To Pagal Hai (1997).
In response, Kamra took to social media to criticize T-Series for the copyright claim. "Hello T-Series, stop being a stooge. Parody and satire come under fair use legally. I haven’t used the lyrics or the original instrumental of the song. If you take this video down, every cover song/dance video can be taken down. Creators, please take note of it."
T-Series defended its actions, asserting that Kamra had used their musical compositions without authorization. A spokesperson for the company told PTI: "Mr. Kunal Kamra has not taken any authorization or approval for the usage of the underlying musical work in the song. Hence, the content has been blocked for infringement of composition rights."
The Eknath Shinde Parody and Political Fallout
Following the release of Kamra’s special, Shiv Sena workers vandalized the Habitat Comedy Club in Mumbai, where the show was recorded. The Mumbai Police arrested 12 individuals connected to the attack, though they were later released on bail.
A case has also been registered against Kamra, prompting police action. He was summoned to appear before the authorities on March 26 but requested a week’s extension, citing security threats. The police rejected his request and asked him to present himself by March 31. Kamra has since stated that he is currently in Tamil Nadu.
His show included a parody of "Bholi Si Surat," seemingly targeting Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. The song’s lyrics included the word gaddar (traitor), interpreted as a reference to Shinde’s 2022 split from the Shiv Sena, which led to the downfall of the Uddhav Thackeray-led government.
The video quickly gained traction, amassing over 7.6 million views and nearly 600,000 likes.
Eknath Shinde responded to the controversy by suggesting that Kamra’s jokes were part of a targeted attack. He claimed: "This is a ‘supari’ (contract) given to the comedian to defame me."
Kamra, however, denied any malicious intent, stating he was prepared to cooperate with legal authorities but would not issue an apology.
Financial Support From Viewers
Despite the legal troubles, Kamra has received widespread support from his fans, not just in words but also financially. YouTube’s Super Thanks feature has enabled viewers to donate money, with contributions ranging from ₹400 to ₹10,000. The donations reportedly amount to several lakhs, with international support pouring in from donors using US dollars, British pounds, Canadian dollars, and UAE dirhams.
One viewer who donated ₹2,000 wrote: "Thanks for bringing the naked truth out, which this country fails to acknowledge. I know you will be targeted, but it takes guts to stand up to the bullies and tell the truth."
Another fan commented: "My all-time favorite stand-up comedian who always speaks about real issues. Proud of you, man!"
Kamra’s YouTube channel, which has 2.4 million subscribers, saw a surge in engagement following the controversy. Google search trends indicated a peak in interest around his name between March 24-25, further highlighting the impact of the issue.
Kamra also took a jab at Indian mainstream media, accusing them of being biased in favor of the ruling party. He wrote on X: "The mainstream media at this point is nothing but a miscommunication arm of the ruling party. They are vultures who report on issues that don’t matter to the people of this country. If they all shut shop from tomorrow till eternity, they will be doing a favor to the country, its people, and their own children."
