There was an unnerving cloudburst in the sky that afternoon. The day turned to night, and in that sudden darkness my phone delivered the news I could not believe: my friend Chuck Russell was no more.
Chuck came into my life quite by accident, some twenty-plus years ago. A mutual friend, an investment banker, asked me to meet with a well-known American filmmaker and writer who had grown fascinated with India’s myths and epics. Chuck needed no introduction in Hollywood, the director behind ‘The Mask’, ‘Eraser’, and ‘The Scorpion King’, the man who helped turn Jim Carrey, Cameron Diaz, and Dwayne Johnson into superstars, whose films had earned more than two billion dollars at the box office and shaped a generation of filmmakers who came after him. I invited him to dinner at a well known Indian restaurant on La Cienega Boulevard, and I remember that evening as if it were last week. Chuck arrived with a script in hand, his vision for the Legend of Hanuman. He spoke of it with such wonder, such careful understanding of the Ramayana’s nuances, that by the time dinner ended I knew I had met someone rare. From that evening on, we stayed close.
Chuck and his remarkable producing partner, Ania, immersed themselves in yoga, meditation, and Ayurveda, and became fixtures at our gatherings in Los Angeles. In November 2024, when the International Film Festival of India in Goa, under Shekhar Kapur’s direction, asked me to help bring a major Hollywood name to the festival, I thought of Chuck immediately. He was in Mexico at the time, but without hesitation he agreed to fly halfway around the world at short notice to conduct a workshop. I will never forget watching him walk onto that stage. The room fell silent, and then he simply took it over, the master of his craft, disarming everyone with insight, experience, and wit. He described his Hollywood career as “a bit of a magical mystery tour and a bit of an adventure,” and the audience could have listened to him for hours, so total was their enchantment with his passion and his humility. Chuck and Ania stayed on for the rest of the festival, meeting young filmmakers and seasoned actors alike with the same warmth and curiosity. Pankaj Saxena, the festival’s artistic director, later told me that Chuck Russell had been the true star of that edition.
As he left for the Goa airport, Chuck pulled me into a hug. “At first I knew you just as a business acquaintance,” he said, “then as a friend when I came to Goa. Now, as I leave India, I feel you are my brother.” Not long after, he wrote the most generous words about me for the launch of my last book, words I will carry with me always.
Chuck, it was the honor of my life to know you, to learn from you, to sit across a table and lose track of time in conversation. I will miss your laughter most of all, the way it filled a room the same way your presence did.
Till we meet again, on the other side.
Rest in peace, my brother.
